Choose your article from either print or online versions of The Globe and Mail, The National Post or The Toronto Star etc. Local papers are also acceptable e.g.: Etobicoke Guardian etc.

You may look back as far as twelve months (the article can be dated no earlier than September 2019 – it is NOT the date of the crime but instead the date of the article than must be within the last year)

The article should be at least 500 words long (one column of 60 lines) but not much longer as the assignment may become unmanageable with too large of an article or not have enough information if the article is too tiny. (The instructor will not be counting the number of words on the article).

2. Have a brief introduction and in your own words, briefly summarize the issue addressed in the article you have chosen.

3. At what stage (police, courts, corrections) did the article/case takes place?

4. Critical analysis (comparision of the course materials (concepts, theories and themes) with a ‘real life’ example (the article) of crime in Canada, in light of the main theories, concepts and/or themesof criminology in Canada.

5. Concluding reflections. Things to consider (but are NOT mandatory to include in the paper): Do you think ‘justice’ was done? Do you think the Canadian public would agree? Why or why not? Explain.

What role did the police play, if any? Do you think they did so effectively?

What influence does the media have and what is society’s response?

Is the State doing enough to stop this type of crime? What role should the State play to prevent this type of crime?

What was the effect on the community? What do you think we can do to make our communities safer from this type of crime or rehabilitate offenders
