The lecture includes the stages and a sample of analysis of the Hindu god Krishna. Also, you will see the stages from the pattern on the left in brown, and explanations of how Krishna fits each stage in pink on the right.

Additionally, Your task is to determine how well Hercules fits Raglan’s pattern. Use the Krishna sample as a guide. You will need to pull information from aspects of Hercules’s life from the reading.

It may be possible to find analyses of Hercules online—please do your own work—the assignment will go through Safe Assign.

Please make sure you are thorough and that you have labelled each of the stages in a similar manner to the provided sample so I know what you are intending your examples from the heroes’ lives to illustrate. Be thorough–if you only find three stages, you have not done enough! Also, provide both the stage you have identified and the illustration from the myth.

NOTE:

This activity may not be revised once you have submitted your analysis, the analysis Raglan himself did on Hercules will be available to you. Yours does not have to match his, but you should come close.

2. Write an essay in which you explain the following:

Using the lecture “Epic Literature: An Overview”

(a) Which of the cycle of events from page two of the lecture does Hercules complete?

(b) Which of the characteristics of the epic from page three of the lecture, does Hercules possess?

(c) Which of the characteristics of an epic hero from pages three-four of the lecture, does Hercules exhibit?

Using the lecture “Heroes”

Review the discussion of the heroic monomyth as developed by Joseph Campbell (this is just an introduction—we will spend more time on Campbell later.

Also, Identify all of the stages of the monomyth that Hercules meets.

This assignment should be written as a formal essay of at least 300 words. You should not provide a plot summary, but use only those elements of the plot that support the points you are making.
