You will demonstrate mastery of the learning objectives and skills developed in the course, identifying key elements of the theory and practice of historical writing, by writing a seven- to ten-page (not including title page or bibliography) historiographical essay that examines one of the following historical issues:

Why did witchcraft persecutions take place in Early Modern Europe or the British colonies in North America? How have historians attempted to explain the causes and effects of the witch craze?

This essay should cite at least six scholarly secondary sources selected from those available in the course and from the final preparatory assignment in Week 3. In order to be successful on this assignment, you should do the following:

Firstly, Identify the thesis and key elements of each historian’s argument.

Secondly, Identify debates between scholars with regard to the historical issue under consideration.

Thirdly, Identify the source materials the authors are using (both primary and secondary).

Fourthly, Explain the methods, methodologies, or theoretical approaches the authors are employing.

Further, Explain the reasons how or why a given scholar’s approach might produce a different interpretation than that found in another study.

Also, Explain how scholars have built upon, supported, critiqued, or dismissed the positions presented in prior studies.

Explain why one author’s interpretation might be more convincing than that of another.

Explain how or why each study provides a unique answer to the historical question under consideration to enhance the understanding of the issue.

Identify questions or areas of research that require further examination.

The Final Paper

Must be seven to ten double-spaced pages in length (not including title and bibliography pages) and formatted according to Chicago Manual of Style

Must include a separate title page with the following:

Title of paper

Student’s name

Course name and number

Instructor’s name

Date submitted

Address a historical issue chosen from options presented in Week 1 and developed throughout the course.

Must compose an analytic thesis statement regarding the state of scholarship on the historical issue.

Must analyze the historiography relevant to the topic.

Use at least six scholarly secondary sources. At least three of these sources must be derived from your own research that goes beyond the materials provided in the course for each topic. You are encouraged to conduct research for peer-reviewed scholarly articles (using databases such as JSTOR) and scholarly books (searching the Ebook Central) using the Ashford University Library, in accordance with university policy on acceptable source use.

Must document all sources according to the Chicago Manual of Style.

Must include a separate bibliography page, formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style.
