What’s going on in the Tech world that is affecting our marketing communication? How does it have an impact, whether it’s an app, a platform, or a medium? Is the effect just and/or ethical? Does it impact the entire global community? Pick three recent (since the midterm) stories and/or presentations and explore how our world is changing through technology.

Instructions: This is part exam and part reflection. We’ve discussed many of the topics/issues that surfaced in your individual presentations. We also examined a range of issues in the last series of readings. All are important topics that will continue to dominate in various ways, now and for some time to come.

So here’s one last chance to reflect on them. Take a stand. Speak your peace. Support your answers with what you read, your class colleagues reported and we discussed.

Choose only three from the following four topical areas. None can be from an area in which you did your research, presentation and paper. You must restrict your supporting ideas from others’ presentations or any of the readings/viewings that were assigned for the discussion groups (including readings you reported on).

Then use your notes from class, ideas that came from class discussions, any recent Ad Age/Daily PR or Creativity reading, and the discussion in Post Truth (on Bullshit) that might be relevant. You can also draw from information from the individual PowerPoint presentations that are in the Research Discussion Forum (except from yours).

Be sure to include discussion of at least one of the core issues of ethics, justice, diversity and/or global awareness in each answer.

Include discussion from at least three different sources for each question, nine different sources in total. Be sure to use parenthetical citations as you borrow from readings or class colleagues and their presentations: (e.g. Kaitlin, Objectification of Women). Construct an argument/discussion for each of the three topics, based on the reading and presentations.

Address what you’ve learned about the issue, what you feel is/are the critical point(s) about that issue and how you feel it can or should be resolved…and why? Reflect here, on how advertising and marketing communication, for good or for ill, affects our world, our thought process and the trajectory of our collective lives. Each essay is worth 30 pts. and you should devote at least 6 pages and at most 8 pages, double-spaced, to the entire exam. Some of you don’t know when to stop. Stop at 8 pages. Keep all answers within one MSWord file and be sure to proofread and spell check.

How does it have an impact, whether it’s an app, a platform, or a medium? Is the effect just and/or ethical? Does it impact the entire global community? Pick three recent (since the midterm) stories and/or presentations and explore how our world is changing through technology.

2. Once again, advertising, PR or social media branding has made some positive (ethical/just/diverse/global) impact on some aspect of our world. Other brands have simply screwed up and had negative impact (unethical/unjust/not diverse/globally insensitive). Pick three recent (since the midterm) stories and/or presentations, positive or negative, and explain what happened in terms of each being ethical, just, diverse and/or globally sensitive. Why do you find these significant? What have you learned to do and/or not to do?

3. This is my alliteration question. Pick one of the following topics: 1) privacy (and data mining), 2) portrayals (of women, minorities, etc.) or 3) political advertising
Then find three articles/presentations/videos about it and discuss in terms of ethics, justice, diversity or global awareness.

4.  COVID-19 will forever be indelibly etched in our minds…maybe in our souls. It will likely affect the beginning of your careers and maybe your entire careers. A number of readings, during this second half of the semester, have dealt with how marketers, agencies, PR firms and consumers are responding to this pandemic crisis. Pick three readings/viewings that address some of the best information you found on this topic and address it in terms of ethics, justice, global awareness or diversity.

Finally, It was a distinct pleasure to spend at least some of the semester with all of you. I’m sorry it’s ending this way for you. I know the college is planning a commencement of some sort for you as a way of celebrating your achievements, even if they’re delayed.
