Overview of Assignment:
For this assignment, you are expected to draft a two-page memorandum analyzing your Antigone reading.
Purpose of Assignment:
This assignment will help you develop two important skills. First, you are expected to read, understand, and critically analyze a case study and mine it for leadership lessons. That skill will be of great value to you as examples of effective (and ineffective!) leadership abound in multiple places. Second, you are expected to draft a focused essay critically analyzing the text and answering specific questions outlined below. That task provides you with the opportunity to practice effectively communicating higher-level critical analysis in written form, also an important skill.
You are expected to draft a two-page essay that does two things:
· Firstly, what did reading Antigone teach you about effectively speak truth to power?
· Secondly, consider either of these:
o When you have two leaders who have opposing opinions based on (valid to them) moral grounds, how do you resolve the situation?
o Alternatively, when you have a leader who seems incapable of considering information counter to their own worldview, how do you resolve the situation?
· In preparing your reflection, briefly use at least two specific examples/references from the reading to support your position. You may also use other readings to support your position.
· Finally, Be sure to follow the format outlined at the end of this memorandum. it will make your work easier.
General Writing Standards:
Your paper must be single-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, and have one-inch margins. You are limited to three pages, I will stop reading at the end of the third page. Therefore, choose your words carefully, and make every word count. Cite your sources, APA in-text citations are appropriate. Your paper should also follow the below format.
Audience and Voice:
You are writing an essay about a specific and focused topic coming from a work of fiction. You should assume that the reader is familiar with it. Therefore, you do not have to restate all of the facts to prove that you’ve read it. Even so, you should write an essay that clearly sets forth the purpose in an opening paragraph (answer the question, why is the reader taking time to read it?); provides a “road map” for the structure and tone of the paper by identifying the specific points/questions you are covering; analyzes those questions logically, discretely, and concisely; offers remedies; and, has a conclusion supported by evidence. Generally, writing in the first person is not recommended for this type of paper. Headings may be useful. Please see the recommended outline at the end of this memorandum.
Self-Evaluating your Work:
In thinking about your content, style, and overall writing, make sure you fully understand what you are asked to do in the assignment. Follow the writing standards and be sure to proofread your work. Self-assess your own work to make sure you meet or exceed those standards.
General Advice for the Writer:
In writing your paper you should begin by doing the readings, and while doing them think about the questions you’ve been assign ed. However, it is not enough to simply go through the readings looking for quotes that match a theme. Rather, you should find some aspect of the assigned topic and deal with it on a deeper and more meaningful basis. You cannot effectively do this assignment unless you first fully understand the reading.
Form and Writing Conventions: 40%
Structure your memorandum as below. You should have a very clear introduction and thesis. You should frame the main points for the audience. As appropriate, you should also use supporting evidence directly from the text. Note – you must also use and properly cite the assigned reading, and you must properly cite the supporting readings as well. Additionally, be sure to effectively cover the specific topics you have been assigned, to support your conclusions with evidence, and to properly cite your sources.
