Paper 1: Protest Analysis

In this 5-6 page essay, you will use the first week’s readings and instructional materials to contemplate the meaning of rhetoric and social protest. This paper should be written in times new roman,12 pt. font, 1 inch margins, double spaced, 5-6 pages long, not including a references.  The paper should be in APA format, with references on the final page. Your paper should include:
Firstly, at least 4 key terms from chapters 1- 3 of The Rhetoric of Agitation and Control
Secondly, Citation from at least 2 other readings or sources from the course.
Thirdly, At least 1 outside source.

Choose a protest movement that interest you. If you are struggling for inspiration, look into protests and demonstrations related to:

Black lives matter                               PFLAG
Me Too                                                Women’s March
Stonewall                                            Earth First
Occupy Movement                             Indigenous Peoples March
Anti-Nuclear Movement                     Disability rights movement
Druid City Pride                                 Never Again

It may be easier to follow a specific protest leader or rhetor that you admire, (eg. Colin Kapernick, Greta Thunberg, Audre Lorde).

Feel free to draw from any of these or none of them, but find something that interests you and that you feel passionate about. For the majority of these, you will need to be more specific (finding a specific line of demonstration and protests within the larger theme).  This will be the protest movement that you follow throughout the class and will inform your final project.

Using a recent protest or demonstration from the movement you have chosen as an example, explain in your own words:
Firstly, How have they employed rhetoric and an understanding of political discourse in order to fight against the establishment?

Secondly, What strategies of agitation have they employed and how?

Thirdly, What strategies of control as the establishment utilized to respond to the movement?

Make sure also to Identify: topic/issue, group/org/person, historical context, locate on continuum of activism, leader/follower challenge, rhetorical style, what is “winning”?

Finally, Graded for clarity of writing, accuracy of applied terms, insight into rhetorical dynamics.
